Flat feet, also known as pes planus, occurs when the arch of the foot collapses, bringing the sole into contact with the ground.

Causes

Flat feet can result from:

  • Genetics – Family history of flat feet.
  • Developmental issues – Arch fails to develop in children.
  • Ageing – Weakening of tendons and ligaments.
  • Injury – Foot or ankle trauma.
  • Obesity – Excess weight strains the feet.
  • Prolonged stress – Long periods of standing or walking in unsupportive footwear.

Symptoms

Flat feet can cause:

  • Foot pain in the arch or heel.
  • Swelling along the inner side of the foot.
  • Difficulty with movement.
  • Fatigue after prolonged standing or walking.

Complications

Flat feet can lead to:

  • Over pronation – Inward rolling of the foot causing knee, hip and back problems.
  • Achilles Tendonitis – Inflammation of the tendon connecting calf muscles to the heel.
  • Plantar Fasciitis – Inflammation of the planar fascia.
  • Bunions and Hammertoes – Result from altered foot mechanics.
